all about the onions

I can never keep red onions in the house in the summer months so this year I’ve decided to grow some myself. I’ve gone for a varitey called “Rubin” and they are waiting to be planted this weekend. The soil in my vegetable bed has been turned and I’ve incorporated some compost. The small onion bulbs should be planted in rows at a depth of about 5cm (a finger) and approximately a hand span apart – the closer they are together the smaller the end result. I shall expect to harvest them towards the end of August, about two weeks after the leaves have yellowed. A handy tip is always label and date your planted rows, you really will forget what you’ve sown.
